Unfortunately, 6 million cats and dogs are placed in shelters every year. Half, or more, of these animals will be euthanized. Many of these shelters are also in desperate need of supplies to properly support the overwhelming number of animals in their care.

Awareness of the need to rescue animals from shelters has increased in recent years, resulting in fewer euthanized animals. But more must be done. This is why Pet Partners is asking you to support H.R. 34, legislation that would create “National Animal Rescue Day” in the United States on the first Saturday of October every year.

An official day honoring animal adoptions would result in celebrations through adoption events, festivals, and charitable giving which will increase revenues for shelters and pet adoptions - while helping to raise awareness of animal rescue and spaying/neutering pets.

I’m a constituent concerned about the 6 million cats and dogs placed into animal shelters every year. Of these, up to 4 million will be euthanized.

There are 3,000 to 4,000 animal shelters throughout the United States in need of critical items like medical supplies, blankets, towels, cleaning supplies, food, and educational materials about owning a pet. Many of these shelters rely on donations to operate.

While increased awareness of animal rescue programs throughout the United States has significantly reduced the number of cats and dogs euthanized, more must be done.

Many rescue animals fill an important role in our society as therapy animals. They visit children in cancer treatment facilities and veterans in V.A. hospitals, their presence helps abused children begin communicating and victims of Alzheimer's disease to focus on the present. It’s time the United States honors the role of rescue animals in American life and highlights the need for increased adoptions.

This is why I’m asking you to support H.R. 34, which would designate the first Saturday in October as “National Animal Rescue Day.” An official day honoring animal adoptions would result in celebrations through adoption events, festivals, and charitable giving which will increase revenues for shelters and pet adoptions - while helping to raise awareness of animal rescue and spaying/neutering pets overall.
